Description
The War Memorial in Leyburn, dating from around 1920 with alterations made around 1947, is constructed from granite with sandstone walling and iron railings. This Saxon cross type memorial is situated within its own railed area, which is defined by a low stone wall topped with iron railings and features an iron gate on the south side.
The memorial is elevated on three square stone steps, with the upper step on the south side inscribed with the words "Erected near the site of the old market cross which was removed in 1837." The north side bears the names of those who died in the Second World War. The tapering square base includes a panel on the south side listing the names of those who died in the Great War, while the east and west faces display the years "1914" and "1918" in sunk panels. The square cross shaft features a sword carved on both main faces, and the circular cross above has plain and simple mouldings.
