Description
The Pyramid and surrounding piers, built in 1728, are located at St Anne's Hill in Castle Howard. Designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor for Charles Howard, the 3rd Earl of Carlisle, this structure commemorates Lord William Howard, the Elizabethan founder of the Carlisle branch of the Howard family. The pyramid is made of limestone and stands on a low podium featuring some vermiculated rustication. It has sides measuring approximately 9 metres and is flanked by angled pairs of piers, each about 20 metres from the corners. The piers have square bases on plinths and hollow columns with oval apertures that interrupt a lateral band, topped with stepped capitals. Inside the pyramid, there is a large bust of Lord William Howard.
