Description
The pavilion and wall with balustrade, located in the garden on the west side of the house at Baldersby Park, date from the early to mid-18th century. Constructed of ashlar stone, the pavilion features a lead roof and is a single-storey structure with three bays. The garden side is open, while the side and rear walls are solid. It is designed in a Tuscan distyle with columns in antis that support a round-arched arcade, which includes a keystone band. The pavilion has a dentilled cornice and a flat roof with a parapet. The rear wall displays a blind arcade in the same style.
The wall with balustrade encloses the south and west sides of a sunken garden. It is made of coursed ashlar and stands approximately 80 centimetres high, supporting a balustrade with an ashlar coping. Solid piers are placed at intervals, and raised corner platforms are accessed by curved steps that extend forward from the wall line. Originally, there was a similar balustrade to the right of the house, which contributed to a balanced elevation. The estate was formerly known as Newby Park.
