Description
Grove House, built around 1745-1754 originally as the World's End Inn, features later wings added around 1897-1902. The building has three storeys with a five-window central section that includes dormers, and two-storey, five-window wings. It has hipped slated roofs topped with battlemented parapets. The exterior is made of coursed, squared grit stone rubble, with long and short dressings to the quoins of the central block, and includes cornices and a continuous plain band at the first floor. The windows are recessed sash types with bays and glazing bars, while the outer bays of the west wing feature splayed bay windows. A stone porte cochere from around 1896 has arched entrances and a battlemented parapet adorned with heraldic lions at the corners, along with a doorway that has block dressings and bays. An attached four-storey tower on the east wing also has a battlemented parapet with machicolations. Inside, there is an interesting former picture gallery in the east wing and a billiard room extension at the rear. The west wing features an elaborate stone open fireplace with a mantlepiece supported by caryatids, a balustraded staircase, and a gallery, along with a stained glass window depicting various trades and industries.
