Description

Lock House is an early 19th-century building, likely a cottage orné, situated on Boroughbridge Road in Ripon. The building is constructed of roughcast and has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The windows are 2-centred arched sashes with glazing bars. The front door is also 2-centred arched, with a fanlight above, also containing glazing bars. The history of the property is connected to the Ure Navigation Act of 1767 and the subsequent construction of the Ripon Canal, which opened in 1773. It is believed that Lock House either replaced an earlier lock-keeper's house or was built new at that time.
