Description
These are a row of six terraced houses, numbers 51 to 57 North Marine Road, built around 1820 to 1830 as part of a larger development and closely related to the earlier properties at numbers 39 to 49. They are constructed of red brick with stone bands defining the basement and ground floor levels. The houses have a wooden frieze and cornice which originally topped the main structure, later augmented by slate mansard attics.
Each house has two windows on the upper floors, featuring flat stucco arches and retaining their original sash windows with glazing bars, although some windows have been replaced with casements. The ground floor and basement levels are set back with segmental bow windows, which are two-storey high and incorporate tripartite sash windows with glazing bars. The front doors are four-panel affairs, each topped with a rectangular fanlight recessed within a Greek Doric porch; numbers 55 and 57 share a double porch. A double flight of stone steps leads up to the entrances, flanked by Victorian cast iron railings extending to the small front areas. The properties face the sea with prominent three-storey canted bays.
The listed buildings, ranging from number 31 to 115 (odd numbers) including Gibson’s Hotel, combine to form a notable group.
