Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Peter, built in 1858 by the architectural firm Goldie of Weightman, Hadfield and Goldie, is a large and austere church constructed from coursed stone rubble. It is not oriented in the traditional east-west direction. The church features a two-light window with Decorated and geometrical tracery, along with buttressed aisles and a clerestory. Notably, it has a windowless polygonal apse, which Eastlake noted as a first for churches. At the north end, next to the apse, there is a low square tower. A porch is located on the side at the north end, showcasing elaborate tracery above the door. Additionally, there is a large five-light window on the north side, and the sanctuary includes paintings by Goldie.
