Description
The Great Barn at Elslack Hall Farm is a large barn built in 1672. It is constructed of coursed rubble and features a stone slate roof. The barn is very long, entirely rectangular, and quite narrow. The left-hand end has quoins, while the right-hand gable has been recently rebuilt. Most of the original fabric is preserved in a section near the center, which includes a sliding door.
Notable openings include a chamfered doorway partly formed from quoins, a doorway with a Tudor arch made from two stones, and two chamfered cart entries with elliptical heads, the first of which has a corresponding entry on the opposite side. There are also breather openings. Above the first cart entry, there is an inscribed stone that features the initials "RB" (possibly for Benson) and the date. The rear wall of the barn is obscured by cattle sheds.
Inside, the barn has been subdivided by stone walls, and the roof has been renewed with sawn trusses in the southern part. However, the northern end retains heavy king-post trusses with angle struts.
