Description

The Three Mariners is a Grade II* listed building located at No 47 Quay Street. This structure is a late 17th century recasing of a timber-framed building, which likely dates back to the 16th century. It features a two-storey red brick front with a moulded brick eaves cornice and a gable end pantile roof. The front has four bays, with two windows aligned in the center on both floors, a small window above the door to the left, and a blind bay to the right. The center first-floor windows are two-light thin mullioned-transomed casements, while the ground floor windows are recessed 18th century glazing bar sashes with fielded panelled shutters. There are four moulded brick pediments above a moulded brick string that aligns with the four bays on the ground floor. The right-hand blind bay features carved brick roundel ornaments on both floors. To the left, there is an elaborate early 18th century door consisting of three panels with a shaped center and upper panel, set within a late 18th century architrave doorcase. This doorcase has a frieze decorated with fluting and roundels, along with small brackets that support the cornice and pediment, and a false rectangular fanlight. The exposed west elevation shows the timber frame with braces, a tie beam, a king post, and a collar.

Inside, there are some traces of the original timber framing, but much of it has been plastered or boxed in. A single bay two-storey wing retains some evidence of framing with studding. The front ground floor room features late 17th century to early 18th century panelling.
