Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a Grade II listed building located in Crayke, dating from the 15th century on an earlier site, with a north aisle added in 1865. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a concealed roof in the Perpendicular style. The church has a west tower, a three-bay single-aisled nave, a two-bay chancel, and a south porch. The two-stage tower includes a three-light window and a two-stage bell opening. The nave and chancel are adorned with two-light elliptical windows that have hood moulds, some of which have been partly restored. The exterior is characterized by battlements and pinnacles, along with 19th-century gargoyles. The building also has a plinth and buttresses with off-sets.
Inside, the tower and chancel arches are double chamfered. The east window features three lights and glass by W Waites, dating before 1852. The church has good low-pitch oak roofs with moulded tie beams supported on corbels, although some timbers have been replaced. The chancel screen incorporates some 15th-century work, and there is a 15th-century font. The pulpit is dated 1637, and the 17th-century pews have straight tops with knobs at each end. A late 16th-century monument to Sir John Gibson and his wife includes recumbent stone effigies.
