Description
The Church of St Chad, along with its gate and gateposts, dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century and was re-erected in 1879 by G G Scott Junior and Temple Moore. It is constructed from limestone ashlar with a stone slate roof and features a wooden and lead bellcote. The church consists of a single-cell nave and chancel, each with one bay, separated by a screen. The entrance is located on the west front and includes 6-panel double doors with a middle post decorated with attached turned balusters. There is a panelled wood infill beneath a round arch on moulded imposts, and an oval window above. The south side has two stepped three-light windows, with the central light being round-headed and featuring stone hoodmoulds. A small square-headed window is present on the north nave wall, and the east window mirrors those on the south side. The roof is steeply pitched, with gable copings and shaped kneelers. Inside, there are fragments of 15th-century glass in the north nave window. The gateposts are made of 19th-century sandstone, adorned with scroll moulding and a double entablature that has moulded cornices and ball finials. The gates are wrought iron and were added in the 20th century. This church was formerly a chapel to West Newton Grange in Oswaldkirk.
