Description
Nelson Gate is a gateway designed in the form of a triumphal arch, located on the Duncombe Park Estate and built in 1806. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features a triumphal arch design with an impost and a dated keystone, along with a superimposed Tuscan order. The front of the arch has an inscribed frieze that reads: "To the memory of Lord Viscount Nelson and the unparalleled gallant achievements of the British navy." The rear of the arch bears the inscription: "Lamented Hero! 0 price his conquering country grieved to pays 0 dear bought glories of Trafalgar Day!" The structure is topped with a moulded cornice.
