Description
The Coach House and Nos 1 and 2 Hall Cottages at Gateforth Hall, originally listed as the former stables and coach houses, date from around 1814 and have undergone 20th-century alterations. The central section is a single storey with an attic that serves as a dovecote and features one bay, flanked by single storey, two-bay ranges, and two two-storey wings, which were originally three bays and are set at right angles to the main structure.
The centre has a full-height round ashlar arch, with the lower part now containing 20th-century garage doors. Above this is an ashlar band and a 20th-century radial window in the arch's head. Each range has two carriage entrances under segmental arches, with later infill, except for one that retains an original decorated radial fanlight above the entrance.
The left wing has been altered to create two cottages, which are rendered and whitewashed, featuring 20th-century openings and a first-floor ashlar band. The right wing includes two wide outer carriage arches and an inner stable entrance arch with segmental heads, all with 20th-century infill. This wing also has a first-floor ashlar band, 20th-century windows in original openings under flat brick arches, and one later inserted window, all with stone cills. The building has bracketed eaves throughout and hipped roofs. Inside, there are red brick nesting boxes in the dovecote.
