Description
This is a row of five red brick houses, dating from around 1820 to 1830, located on North Marine Road. Originally five storeys high with a basement, attics were added later. The houses have stone sill courses to the ground and first floors, a wooden frieze, moulded eaves cornices and low-pitched gable end slate roofs. Each upper floor has two windows, with sashes containing four panes, and three panes above the front door. Flat stucco arches feature above the windows. Numbers 47 and 49 are lower in height and feature later casement windows. The ground floor windows and basement have superimposed, canted bay windows with panelled aprons and projecting cornices. The front doors are made of four moulded panels, each with a two-pane fanlight, and are set within Greek Doric engaged porches that are paired with the porches of numbers 45 and 47. Victorian cast iron railings enclose the areas and lead up to the double flight of steps at the doorways. The seaward-facing sides of the houses have three-storey canted bays. These houses, along with the other listed buildings from numbers 31 to 115 (odd), including Gibson's Hotel, form a notable group.
