Description
Brackenburgh is a house that has been divided into two dwellings. It features an inscription and coat-of-arms belonging to Joseph Harris, stating "MY PRINCE AND MY COUNTRY," and is dated 1902. The house was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and underwent minor alterations in the 1960s, including the demolition of a servants' wing. The exterior is made of dressed cream Lazonby sandstone, with parapets and flush quoins. The roof is covered with graduated greenslate and has banded ashlar sandstone chimney stacks.
This large country house is two storeys high and has an L-shape with numerous bays. The garden facade includes, from left to right, a projecting dining room, a music room, and a hall, with a round-arched loggia in front of the boudoir. The right-angled office range on the right is now a separate property. The house features various large transomed and mullioned windows, including some canted bay windows.
On the rear entrance facade, there are five high projecting central bays. The left side, which was originally a billiard room, has been converted into a garage, while the right three-bay section now has blank walls due to the demolition of a projecting wing. The left side has double plank doors set in a round arch beneath a crested coat-of-arms, with pilasters extending to a string course above an oriel window flanked by lions, all under a shell hood. The facade also includes a large transomed and mullioned window, additional doorways, and 2-light windows on three levels. There is a polygonal angle turret on the left and various mullioned windows on two levels. The right wing features 2- and 4-light windows. An orangery connects Brackenburgh with The Old Tower.
