Description
Stricklandgate House is a house that now serves as Council Offices, built around 1776 for Joseph Maude. It was converted into a museum in 1854 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The building features stucco banding on the ground floor set on a plinth with rusticated quoins that are incorporated into the banding. There is a stone band between the ground and first floors, while the upper floors are finished with incised stucco. A bracketed wooden gutter runs along the eaves, and the roof is covered with graduated slate, topped by a stone mid chimney.
The house is three storeys tall and has seven bays, with the upper floors being symmetrical. The central entrance consists of a part-glazed door framed by a pedimented doorcase, flanked by three sash windows on the right and two on the left. On the extreme left, there is a semicircular-headed carriage arch that leads to the rear. Each upper floor has seven windows, with sash windows on the first floor and casements on the second. All windows are equipped with moulded sills, and the central window on each upper floor is set within an architrave that features scrolled feet and lugs on the first floor.
