Description
No. 69 and the entrance to Yard 67 is a house that was converted for use as a brush manufactory in 1838 and is now used as estate agent's premises. It dates back to the 16th century for the Wilson family, with Henry Wilson being nominated as the first Alderman of Kendal in 1575. The building was modernised around 1810, which included the introduction of sash windows, along with later additions and alterations.
The structure is built of coursed, squared rubble with quoins at the north end and features a moulded cast-iron gutter. It has a Welsh slate roof with tapered, cylindrical stone chimneys at either end. The building is three storeys high and has three bays. The late 20th-century shop front includes a small window on the right, and the entrance to the yard is on the extreme right, featuring a panelled door located in a passage on the north side. Each upper floor has three late 20th-century sash windows under timber lintels, with earlier blocked openings still visible. A bristling hog trade sign on the first floor above the shop front is a facsimile of the original sign, which is now housed in the Museum of Lakeland Life & Industry.
