Description

No. 95 Stricklandgate is a house, dating from 1728, and later altered. It is now a hostel. The building is constructed of wet-dashed rubble with an eaves cornice and a moulded, cast-iron gutter supported by dentils. It has a graduated slate roof and stone mid and end chimneys. The house is three storeys high and comprises five bays. A panelled door with a rectangular fanlight, set within pilastered reveals, is located on the ground floor to the left. The upper floors contain sash windows. A lead downpipe is fitted, incorporating lead bands with a griffin in low relief at each end, securing it to the wall. According to local tradition, Bonnie Prince Charlie slept at the house during his advance into England in 1745, and again during his retreat. The Duke of Cumberland, pursuing him, slept there the following night.
