Description

The altar tomb located to the southeast of the chancel of the Church of St Laurence is a Grade II* listed structure. This re-used 15th-century altar tomb was likely removed from the church during the mid-18th century rebuilding. It is constructed from unmortared sandstone blocks and features trefoil-headed panelling. Each side has a shallow niche with an ogee head beneath a crocketed gable. The top slab is a later addition, probably from the late 18th century. Set into the slab are three brass plates with inscriptions; the bottom plate, dated 1787, was temporarily removed in 1983. The earliest inscription, located at the top, reads: "H.S.I. Guilielmus & Margareta Atkinson De Low Hall Qui Nomen & Mayoribus derivatum Immane quantum!. suis. Virtutibus Illustrobant. Quam boni; dicant Vicini recolentes Quam chari; Cognata desiderantes: Quam pii: Liberi lugentes. Haec Suis Valediscit Feb:22.1781. AE:100. Hoc Pietatis & Moeroris Monumentum P. Christophorus Atkinson."
