Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a church founded in the 13th century, but it underwent extensive restoration in the 19th century. The medieval stonework can still be seen in the north and end walls, which are made of coursed, squared rubble, while the 19th-century work features sandstone blocks. The building has a plinth, string course, and moulded eaves, along with stepped buttressing. It has a graduated slate roof with stone copings, gabled kneelers, and 19th-century apex crosses. The church has a single cell plan and a three-stage tower that was added to the north-west corner in 1848. A gabled porch, originally located at the west end, was moved and rebuilt on the south side in 1895, and there is a blocked medieval door on the north side. The church features some medieval windows alongside others from the 19th century. Inside, the nave was originally divided by two rows of piers but is now open with an offset chancel arch. The piscina in the south wall of the chancel has a damaged octofoil drain, and there is a tomb-slab in the chancel carved with a crocketed cross, sword, and coat of arms.
