Description
Melmerby Hall is a large house dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of coursed, squared rubble and features rusticated end pilasters, bands between floors, and cavetto moulding at the eaves. The graduated slate roof is adorned with corniced stone chimneys at the mid and ends, as well as copings and kneelers. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan and a symmetrical front that consists of two storeys with an attic and five bays.
The former pedimented doorcase in the centre has been converted into a window, which now features a 20th-century coat of arms above it. There are two sash windows on either side of the door and five above, all with glazing bars set in stone surrounds. The attic windows are 20th-century casements, while re-used medieval windows can be found in the gables. At the rear, an earlier wing contains 17th-century mullioned windows of various builds. A door on the east side has a coat of arms above it, dated 1658, and there is a rainwater head on the extreme right dated 1794. A large semicircular bay window was added to the west side in the 20th century.
