Description

Low Brookside is a house dated 1688, with alterations from the 18th century. It is built of roughcast stone with a graduated slate roof. The main part of the house is two storeys high and has three bays, with a wing to the rear and a later addition on the left return. The front door has six panels and sits within a moulded stone surround; the lintel has the date 1688 carved into a sunken panel, and is supported by moulded and shaped brackets to a stone cornice. Windows are mostly 20th-century casements in thin surrounds, with projecting stone sills. There are end stacks, one on the left and another to the right, set on the front roof slope. The rear wing has an external stack. A mid-18th century fielded-panel door is located on the rear elevation, with the upper panels ogee headed. Inside, the house retains oak ceiling beams and an altered oak staircase with turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded handrail. A three-light oak-mullioned window is now set in an alcove in the lounge, and a similar two-light window is believed to be on the first floor. There are also some original two-panel doors with thumb latches.
