Description
This drinking fountain, located near a railway crossing on Duke Street in Askam in Furness, was built in 1897 by Walter MacFarlane and Co of Glasgow. It is made of cast iron and features a four-columned umbrella design resting on a stone plinth. The fluted columns have ornamental bases and capitals that support moulded and cusped arches, which are adorned with pierced spandrels and corner dragons.
Above each arch are roundels, with the one facing Duke Street inscribed with the cartouche stating "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF HER MAJESTYS DIAMOND JUBILEE" and the motto "KEEP THE PAVEMENT DRY." The canopy is pierced and topped with a crown finial. Beneath the canopy, the fountain has a broad bowl supported by a clustered column. The rear roundel of the canopy features a depiction of Queen Victoria, while the side roundels each display a heron.
There is a matching fountain located at Dalton-in-Furness in the Market Place.
