Description
The War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church, which is a Grade I listed building. It stands to the west of the church, near several other listed structures and scheduled churchyard monuments. The memorial features a tall sandstone cross with a small wheel-head, set on a small stepped pedestal.
The front face of the cross is adorned with intricate carved designs, including interlace on the cross head and a vine wrapped around the shaft, which bears the cross of St Andrew. The main dedicatory inscription at the base of the shaft reads: IN PROUD AND/ GRATEFUL/ MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ PENRITH/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WAR/ 1914-1918.
The rear face of the cross head is similarly decorated, while the shaft features a complex interlace pattern surrounding a Latin cross. Below this decoration is the inscription: AS DYING/ AND BEHOLD/ WE LIVE.
