Description
The pump near the east end of The Green in Dufton was erected by the London Lead Company in the late 19th century. It has a circular plan and is constructed of ashlar stone, featuring a chamfered plinth and a roll-moulded rim around the basin. In the center of the basin, there is an incised stucco column that has a cast-iron lion's head waterspout on the south side. The slot for the pump handle on the north side is blocked. A quotation from Ovid is carved between two roll-mouldings at the top of the column on the south side, which reads: "FONS ERAT INLIMIS, NITIDIS ARGENTEUS UNDIS QUEM NEQUE PASTORES, NEQUE PASTAE MONTE CAPELLAE INFICIENT. ALIUDVE PECUS QUEM NULLA VOLUCRIS NEC FERA PERTURBAT. NEC LAPSUS AB ARBORE RAMUS."
