Description
Topthorne Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the early 18th century. It is constructed of roughcast stone and features a slate roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, with the third bay probably being a later addition. There is a drip course above the ground floor. The ground floor windows in the second and third bays are casements, while the first-floor windows are sashed with vertical glazing bars and horns.
Between the first and second bays, there is a gabled porch that has a 20th-century outer door and a wide-boarded inner door with strap hinges. The farmhouse has gable-end stacks and a cross-axial stack. The left side of the building features three drip courses. At the rear, there is a gabled wing with a corbelled gable-end stack, and the windows have dripstones. There is also a lean-to outshut on the left return of the wing.
Inside, the farmhouse includes an early 18th-century fielded-panel partition with a dado rail and a six-panel door, along with some wide-boarded doors. The staircase has square newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. There are two cupboards with fielded-panel doors; one features a round head and fluted pilasters, with an inscription reading "HWI 1758." A plaster overmantel in a room of the extension is inscribed "HWM/1716" and is adorned with stylized grapevines on either side.
