Description

Shaw End is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble, with some plastered areas, and has a slate roof. The house is arranged in a U-shaped plan. The main range is two storeys high and seven bays wide, featuring a first-floor sill band and a top cornice. Some windows retain sash windows with horns; the central first-floor window has an architrave, frieze, and consoled cornice. The central entrance is marked by a derelict glazed tetrastyle portico, complete with capitals, frieze, and pediments, leading to glazed doors and an overlight with side lights. The interior of this section is derelict; there are no floors or stair, but some stacks remain. A large stair window with a tripartite sash window with glazing bars is present at the rear. A small gabled wing projects below, and a lower service range extends to the north, with a return range to the west. This west return range features a lean-to outshut and a re-entrant hipped porch. Cross-axial stacks are a prominent feature.
