Description
Fryers, Thompson and Turner Monuments are three chest tombs located approximately 22 meters south of Priory Church in Lower Allithwaite, Cartmel. These tombs date from the late 18th century and are made of ashlar stone.
The Thompson tomb features a simple base with fluted pilaster strips at the corners and centers of the sides, along with incised ovals on the sides and ends. It commemorates William, who died in 1754, Judith, who died in 1764, and their children. The top of this tomb is cracked.
To the south, there is another chest tomb that has balusters at the corners and incised lozenges on the sides and end. Its top has a hollow-chamfered edge and a round relief design, which is now worn but likely represents an armorial bearing. This tomb records James Fryers, who died in 1753.
West of the Thompson tomb is a third chest tomb, which has a simple base, fluted pilaster strips at the corners and center of the sides, and rectangular fielded panels on the sides and ends. Its top also features a hollow-chamfered edge. This tomb commemorates Edward, a mariner, Elizabeth Turner, and their son Thomas.
