Description

The garden structure located 50 metres south of Yew Tree Farmhouse dates from around 1836. It features an irregular composition of ashlar and rubble sandstone, roughly rectangular in shape, and is built at the intersection of two earth embankments. The north face has a deep arched recess to the west, and there is a flight of steps on the north face leading to the west face. The flanking walls display sculpture, and a flight of steps extends to an upper level, projecting eastwards with a wall that terminates at an ashlar pier, which serves as a plinth for an urn.

Historically, this structure is associated with Yew Tree Farmhouse, a 18th-century building that was extended in the 19th century. It was home to Thomas Bland (1799-1856), a self-taught sculptor, painter, and composer. Bland created a garden of three terraces that opened in 1837 to commemorate Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. The garden includes many of Bland's known works, featuring animals, urns, and figures in both classical and modern dress. This unique garden is listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
