Description
Flookburgh Farmhouse and buildings are a collection of structures dating from the early 19th century, with the farmhouse itself built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed from stone rubble with dressed stone details and feature a slate roof, while the farmhouse is roughcast, suggesting that the other buildings may have been intended to be similarly finished. The layout is arranged around a courtyard, with the farmhouse located at the north-west corner, now including a north range.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with two bays, the second pair of bays projecting under a gable. It has quoins, and the windows are fitted with rock-faced lintels and are sashed with glazing bars. The entrance is located in the first bay. The north range has been converted into a single-storey extension with inserted casement windows and a later lean-to outbuilding.
The west side of the complex faces the street and consists of four bays with sashed windows. It features an entrance with an overlight and a cross-axial stack. The east range is two storeys tall with five bays; the central bay projects forward under a pedimented gable, while the end bays have hipped gables. The ground floor includes several entrances for a cow house, with two in the end bays and three in the second and fourth bays. The central bay has a large elliptical-headed entrance with a rusticated surround, some of which have been converted to windows. The stone surrounds have projecting edges, and there are two additional windows.
On the first floor, there are pitching eyes, mostly glazed, with projecting edges to their surrounds, and an inserted loading door in the first bay. The gable features a round opening. The south end has four bays, with the first bay recessed and the roof supported by braces, while the third bay projects under a pedimented gable. The openings are similar to those described earlier, with one entrance altered in the second bay and the third bay featuring an elliptical-headed barn entrance with a rusticated surround.
The west range consists of single-storey sheds with single-pitch roofs. The elevations facing the courtyard have been altered, with later lean-to extensions and large elliptical-headed entrances to the east and south, the latter of which is blocked. The farmhouse is included in the listing for its group value with the surrounding buildings.
