Description
The Appleby Boer War memorial, designed by Mr. R Slinger, was erected in 1902 and is made of sandstone. It is prominently situated on Bondgate, outside the Grade II*-listed Church of St Michael. The memorial features an obelisk design with a tapered shaft topped by a cross-head, which represents the early 20th-century badge of the Border Regiment. The cross-head is adorned with a wreath and a Maltese Cross, which is topped by a crown. The central boss of the cross-head has the words "CHINA" and a carved dragon. This cross is placed on a plinth with a pediment that includes carved foliate decorations. The entire structure stands on a three-stepped base that is surrounded by low railings.
On the west face of the plinth, the inscription reads:
"ERECTED/BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION/IN MEMORY OF/THOMAS LEONARD ATKINSON/B COMPANY 2ND VB/BORDER REGIMENT/WHO DIED AT/POTCHEFSTROOM SOUTH AFRICA/JUNE 18TH 1900,/WHILE SERVING WITH THE/VOLUNTEER ACTIVE SERVICE/COMPANY OF THE BORDER REGIMENT/FOR QUEEN AND COUNTRY."
The east face of the plinth features the inscription:
"APPLEBY/ACTIVE SERVICE VOLUNTEERS/IN SOUTH AFRICA 1900.1."
Additionally, the names of 11 individuals who served are inscribed below, listed by first name.
