Description
The Church of St. Michael is a Grade II* listed building located in Appleby in Westmorland, specifically on the west side of Bongate. It contains Saxon fragments, a 13th-century south door, a 14th-century south arcade, and a transept. The church underwent significant restoration by Lady Anne Clifford in 1659 and was further restored with the addition of a north tower in 1885.
The structure is built of coursed red sandstone rubble and features slate roofs. It includes a nave, chancel, south transept, and north tower. The windows display decorated tracery, mostly renewed in the 17th century. The tower is decorated, castellated, and has corner turrets with crocketted pinnacles. The five-bay arcade may have been reconstructed in 1885, along with the chancel arch and a choir screen added in the same year. The timber roofs have arch-braced collars in the nave. Notable features include a Saxon north door and a late 14th-century effigy of Elizabeth Clifford, as well as 18th-century headstones in the churchyard.
