Description
Shepherd's Inn and the adjoining stables are a 18th-century inn located in Melmerby, with the date 1789 inscribed on the door lintel. The building is constructed from thin sandstone blocks and features rusticated quoins on a chamfered plinth, with sill bands on both floors and moulded eaves. It has a graduated slate roof with stone copings, kneelers, and end chimneys. The inn is symmetrical, standing two storeys high with three bays. The central door is framed by a pedimented architrave and flanked by a single sash window on either side, with three additional sash windows above, all featuring glazing bars in stone surrounds. The former stables, which are lower and located at the south end, are made of coursed, squared rubble with quoins and also have a graduated slate roof. They include a central segment-headed wagon door, a 20th-century gabled garage entrance to the left, and two doors to the right. The inn has been extended by two bays into the stables, with two 20th-century windows in stone surrounds on each floor at the extreme left.
