Description

Wattsfield Farmhouse and Cottage is a house and cottage located on Wattsfield Lane in Kendal. The farmhouse dates from the 17th century, while the cottage was added in the 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of wet-dashed rubble sitting on a plinth, topped with graduated slate roofs and rendered mid and end chimneys, including a projecting chimney on the rear wing of the house.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and features three bays. It has a central full-height porch with a panelled outer door framed by an architrave and a segmental pediment that includes a winged head. Above the porch is a small casement window. Inside, there is an original plank inner door with strap hinges set in a chamfered frame. On each floor, there are 20th-century casement windows on either side of the porch.

The adjoining cottage to the left has two bays and features a glazed door with a rectangular fanlight to the left, along with two sash windows above. The north side of the cottage has two sashes on each floor, displaying original wide glazing bars, and two blocked two-light stone-mullioned cellar windows. There are also two similar cellar windows on the stair wing at the rear.

Inside the farmhouse, there is a closed string, dog-leg stair with turned balusters and a moulded handrail, along with square newels topped with ball finials. The kitchen fireplace has a moulded lintel, and there are remnants of a screen and first-floor plaster cornices. The cottage features a closed string, dog-leg stair with corkscrew balusters and moulded handrails, along with square newels (though the ball finials are missing). The front room on the ground floor is panelled and includes a semicircular-headed niche set in a pilastered surround, as well as wooden cornices.
