Description
This is an ice-house located in the south-west corner of the Natland Mill Beck bridge and a disused canal. It was likely built in the mid to late 19th century for Helm Lodge, although it does not appear on the 1838 estate plan and was in use by 1905. The structure features a vaulted stone chamber with a flat floor and is circular in shape, built into the west bank of the Lancaster-Kendal canal, from which ice was originally harvested (the canal is now filled in). Access to the ice-house is through a circular manhole located at the apex of the cantilevered stone vault.
