Description
Sheriff House is a late 18th-century house located on the east side of The Green in Temple Sowerby. It is constructed of ashlar stone with rusticated quoins, a moulded plinth, and a lintel band above the ground floor windows. The roof is made of graduated slate with stone copings and corniced end chimneys, and it features moulded eaves.
The house has a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay front with a central panelled door set within an architrave that has a pediment above. There are paired sash windows on either side of the door, and on the first floor, there is a similar arrangement with a single central sash window. All windows are fitted with glazing bars and have stone surrounds.
At the rear, there is a combined stair window and door featuring impost blocks and a projecting keystone above a traceried, semicircular head. The ground floor on the left side has a four-light window with ogeed trefoil heads.
Adjoining the south end of the house is a former two-storey cottage made of coursed, squared rubble with quoins. It has a graduated slate roof with stone coping and a blocked end chimney. The cottage has two doors that are now enclosed by a 20th-century glazed porch, and there is a single first-floor sash window in a stone surround. A 20th-century garage built at right angles to the cottage is not included in the listing. The front of Sheriff House is identical to that of Beech House, located to the north.
