Description

Scales Fold and the adjoining byre are a farmhouse and byre built in the late 17th century, with alterations and extensions made, including a date of 1729 and the initials J.B. & A.B. displayed above the entrance. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed red sandstone on projecting footing stones, featuring large flush quoins and a graduated green slate roof with sandstone slates at the bottom courses and brick chimney stacks at each end. It is two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance has a 20th-century glazed door with a moulded architrave and an inscribed, dated frieze. Flanking the entrance are enlarged two-pane sash windows, with similar windows located above. There is a small single light window from the 17th century above the entrance and a ground floor fire window to the left. The left end wall shows that the walls have been raised and the rear extended. The rear wall features two early 18th-century upper floor windows, one of which is filled, along with other windows from the 19th and 20th centuries. Inside, the principal room has a beamed ceiling on the ground floor, with a stone heck post and partition that includes a fireplace beam, although the hood is obscured by a false ceiling. A spice cupboard to the left has lost its door but retains its wooden surround. The late 18th-century byre to the right incorporates re-used stone from the house, featuring the initials R.(&)B.E. and the date 1672, although the "72" is a later addition with the earlier date erased. The byre has coursed red sandstone rubble walls and a Welsh slate roof that is slightly higher than that of the house. There is a partly filled round cart arch to the left with a small window above it, and plank doors leading to two byre entrances, with loft doors above, one of which has external stone steps. The listing does not include other outbuildings or the 19th-century kitchen extension to the house.
