Description
The Garden Temple at Holme Island House, located to the south of the house, is a garden structure likely built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features cast-iron columns topped with a lead-covered dome. The temple has a circular plan and is surrounded by a moat, which is crossed on the north side by a cast-iron bridge with limestone abutments and turned iron balustrades.
The temple is elevated on three limestone steps and is supported by 16 Corinthian columns that hold up a circular entablature adorned with goats' heads and swags. The central drum of the temple has low windows on all four sides and is capped by the dome. On the north side, there are curved panelled double doors framed by an architrave with a cornice on brackets. Additionally, there are three round-headed niches facing the other cardinal directions.
The interior has not been fully inspected, but it appears to feature two enriched cornices, a dome with mural painting, niches with leaf decoration in their spandrels, and a central rectangular block of stone. Holme Island House is not included in this listing.
