Description

The Windmill, now a private house, was built in the early 19th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of painted quarry-faced sandstone, topped by a domed wooden cap with a brick chimney stack. The three-storey, tapering circular tower has 20th-century casement windows, most set in original plain reveals. The interior contains no notable features. A circular, wrap-around extension at the base of the building is not of significant architectural interest. The owner intends to restore the sails, which were recorded as having been removed before 1860, when the windmill was reportedly powered by water and steam. Historical references can be found in the Cumberland News of 6 February 1981 and in the Transactions of the Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, new series, volume 72, pages 133-4.
