Description

Moot Hall, now comprising three houses, likely dates from the late 16th century, with additions from the early and late 19th century and alterations in the 20th century. The building has extremely thick, incised rendered walls and a graduated greenslate roof with rendered chimney stacks. It is two storeys high and originally five bays, though now divided into three sections. The central part is number 2, with a lower, projecting gabled two-storey, two-bay extension from the early 19th century forming number 3 to the left, and a higher, late 19th-century gabled two-bay extension forming number 1 to the right. A four-panel door is centrally positioned within a late 17th-century-style cement architrave and segmental pediment. Small, two-light casement windows are set within chamfered cemented surrounds. A small firewindow is on the right side. Above the upper-floor windows is the Salkeld shield of arms. Number 3 has a four-panel side door and wooden cross casement windows within 19th-century chamfered surrounds. Number 1 features a plank door and 20th-century casement windows in red sandstone surrounds. The end wall to the right has a broad, stepped gable buttress, and a plank door is set in a 16th-century chamfered surround with a cambered head. The rear wall showcases a central original chamfered surround to a two-light stone mullioned window, as well as other windows where the stone mullions have been removed. Numbers 1 and 3 occupy the end bays of the original hall and have 20th-century windows to the rear.
