Description

The Butter Cross is a market cross, likely from the 17th century, located in Ireby. It is made of red sandstone and features a stepped plinth topped by an octagonal shaft. The cross head was restored in the 19th century, with designs inspired by the medieval font found in the parish church. Historically, Ireby was known as Market Ireby, as a weekly market was granted there in 1236.
