Description
The Church of St Cuthbert is a church built in 1879 or 1890 by C J Ferguson, located on the north side of Gosforth Road in Seascale. It is constructed from snecked dressed stone and features a slate roof. The building consists of a single vessel nave and chancel, a south nave with an organ loft, and a north vestry. The gables are coped, and the west end has two traceried windows with two lights, positioned beside a short buttress and a gabled bellcote. The aisle includes a vesica window.
On the south elevation, there is a gabled porch with a two-light straight-headed traceried window, while the aisle has three-light traceried straight-headed windows. The rainwater heads are dated 1889 and have scrolly brackets for the downspouts. The gabled organ loft features a two-light window, and the chancel has a two-light window as well. The east end is adorned with a four-light window that has reticulated tracery. The north vestry includes an east entrance, a four-light north window, and a west stack. The five-bay nave's north elevation has two-light windows with single chamfers.
Inside, the church has arch-braced collar trusses supporting the nave roof and a five-bay arcade resting on round piers. The chancel arch consists of two orders. Notable interior features include a polished marble octagonal font with a simple form and a traceried cover, a two-bay arcade leading to the organ loft, and richly carved elements such as the pulpit, stalls, ambos, east panelling, and a brattished reredos. The chancel also has a waggon roof with bosses and stained glass in the chancel windows.
