Description

The Mill and Barns adjoining to the west of Abbey Cowper is a Grade II listed steam-powered corn mill, which has now been converted into a barn. The structure incorporates an earlier farmhouse and barn, with the farmhouse and barn dating back to the 17th century, while the mill itself was built in the early 19th century. The building features cement rendered walls and Flemish bond brickwork at the rear, topped by a graduated hipped slate roof.

The large two-storey, six-bay mill has original buildings at the rear that form a U-shape. The mill includes a gabled two-storey central projection with a side plank door set in a stone surround. It has sash windows with glazing bars, also in stone surrounds, and a large cart entrance at the rear. To the left rear, at right angles to the mill, is the original cross-passage house, which is now a barn; its front entrance has been blocked and converted into a window, and all other original entrances and windows have also been blocked.

There is a late 19th-century extension to the right, which features a canted bay window that connects to the present house. The front wall incorporates sculptured stone from Holme Cultram Abbey. Inside, there is one pair of upper crucks, and blocked upper floor windows, which were concealed when the walls were raised, are visible from the hay loft. The original barn is located to the right rear of the mill, positioned at right angles, with clay walls that now serve as internal walls extended in brick, and it includes a central cart entrance. The building is listed partly for its group value with Abbey Cowper.
