Description

Withybridge Mill and the adjoining barn are a barn and corn mill located in Boddington. The barn dates from the 17th century, while the mill was built in the early 19th century. The barn is timber-framed and covered with wany-edge weatherboarding, standing on a low stone plinth with a corrugated-iron roof. The mill features Flemish-bond brickwork and has a tiled roof.

The barn has five bays, while the mill is a single bay with an off-centre wing, rising to 2½ storeys. The gable of the barn faces the road, with a boarded door on the left accessed by two steps. The mill is set back on the right, featuring a boarded door to the left and an unglazed window with bars, both topped with cambered brick arches. Above the window, there is a cambered brick arch leading to a boarded stable door at the eaves on the right. A gabled dormer with slate cheeks is present as well.

On the left side of the barn, the plinth is partly faced with concrete, and there is a double doorway in the centre leading to the eaves, along with a boarded door on the left. Inside the barn, the framing consists of three panels high, with long braces connecting to corner posts in the gable and side walls at the road end. There are brace posts supporting the tie-beam in the outer trusses, and a cross sill on the road side of the threshing floor with a centre post and long braces to the main posts. The barn has queen-strut trusses, though some struts are missing.

Halfway away from the road, there is an inserted loft with a wooden trough for cattle and a feeding passage, with doors at each end. The barn wall has been partly removed on the ground floor against the mill, where a flywheel is located above. The interior of the mill was not inspected, but it is known that the wheel survives along with two casings for millstones. The mill was added to the barn, and the end of the barn was altered for cow housing, likely in the 19th century.
