Description
The Old Forge is a house located on Boddington Old Gloucester Road, likely dating from the 16th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th century and mid to late 20th century. The building features timber framed walls with brick nogged or rendered panels, painted brickwork, a thatched roof, and a tiled lean-to and rear wing. It has an 'L' plan layout, with the main front consisting of about four bays, one room deep, and 1½ storeys, alongside a single-bay, two-storey rear wing.
The front facing the road has a brick section on the right with timber posts, two small windows, and a boarded door with a rectangular light above. To the left, there is a two-panel high framing with a 6-pane window that has hook hinges for shutters, and two 2-light windows, one of which replaced a door. The brick section includes a 2-light casement window with a cambered brick arch and panelled shutters. A brick lean-to on the left covers the timber framing and features a boarded door on the right return.
Above the main structure are two swept dormers, one with a 2-light casement and the other with paired 2-light casements. The roof is half-hipped, with a chimney on the ridge behind a blocked door. On the left return, there is a fully-glazed French door with a 2-light casement on each side. Above, a gable truss supports the half-hip, with a 2-light casement and raised gables on each side. The left side has slightly projecting brickwork for the rear wing, with painted brickwork, dentil eaves, and a chimney from the eaves at the left corner with an oversailing cap. The original house was extended in the 19th century, and the end bay on the right was added in the mid to late 20th century. An old photograph of the house is available, and further historical context can be found in the Victoria County History of Gloucestershire, Volume VIII, published in 1968.
