Description

Nook House and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dated 1689, featuring the initials I.S. and I.S. (Simpson), with a late 18th century addition. The building is constructed of pink sandstone rubble and has a sandstone slate roof, with a graduated hipped greenslate roof on the extension and 18th century brick chimney stacks.

The farmhouse is a low, 2-storey structure with four bays, while the higher 2-storey, single-bay extension is located to the left, with the barn attached at the rear in an L-shape. The entrance is to the right, leading into a former cross passage, and features a plank door set in a chamfered stone surround, topped by a dated and inscribed lintel with a carved hood mould. On the ground floor, there are 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows with carved hood moulds, along with an enlarged fire window to the left of the entrance. The rear side has a corresponding cross-passage entrance with a chamfered surround and 20th century casement windows in enlarged openings.

The extension also has a plank door in a chamfered surround, and features sash windows with glazing bars set in stone surrounds. The barn, made of red sandstone rubble, has a greenslate roof and includes a large projecting cart entrance leading to the farmyard, as well as slit vents on two levels.
