Description
The Nook and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the mid to late 17th century, with early 19th-century alterations. The house features dressed red sandstone walls, some of which are made from stone sourced from the nearby Roman Wall, and some stones exhibit diamond broaching. It has a graduated slate roof topped with late 19th-century yellow brick chimney stacks. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The entrance boasts a moulded wooden surround with a moulded and dentilled cornice, leading to an iron-studded plank door with a false pointed head. An original entrance to the right has been filled in and enlarged to create a window. The house has large early 19th-century two-light chamfered mullioned windows, with sash windows and glazing bars, which replaced earlier smaller windows; there are remains of a filled window in the top left. The rear wall features an extension that creates a much larger early 19th-century house, which has similar windows and a door. The adjoining barn is constructed of hammer-dressed red sandstone and has a corrugated zinc roof. It includes a large arched cart entrance, plank doors for the entrances and loft, and slit vents. The listing does not include the other farm buildings.
