Description

West Green Bridge is a bridge that spans a canal and later served as a railway bridge. It was constructed between 1819 and 1823 for the Carlisle Canal, with additions made in 1853-1854 for the Port Carlisle Dock and Railway Company. The bridge is built from squared and coursed red and calciferous sandstone, featuring a cast-iron central parapet supported by wooden pillars. The plinth, which has rounded corners, originally supported a canal drawbridge. The bridge was raised in height to adapt it for railway use after the canal closed. Following the closure of the railway in 1964, wooden supports were placed under the bridge.
