Description
Temon and the adjoining outbuilding comprise a farmhouse and a late 16th century bastle house. The farmhouse dates from the late 17th century, with alterations dated 1730 above the entrance, featuring a weathered inscription that begins with "JAMES". The rear of the farmhouse has a double span and a late 18th century face towards Military Road.
The bastle house is constructed with thick walls made of large squared and coursed calciferous sandstone, likely sourced partly from the Roman Wall, and has red sandstone dressings. It has a corrugated asbestos roof and stands two storeys tall with three bays. The ground floor includes a plank door and a window, both with plain 19th century surrounds. To the right, there is a round arched cart passage, probably from the 18th century. The upper floor features a loft entrance from the 19th century and three original windows with chamfered surrounds; an iron grille mentioned in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments has recently been removed. The rear wall has a later filled entrance on the ground floor, while two original windows above also have chamfered surrounds, and a third later window over the archway to the left has iron bars. There is a stone water spout to the left of the central window and a probable gun loop to the right. The interior includes a fireplace on the upper floor.
The adjoining house to the right is built of dressed calciferous sandstone on a chamfered plinth, with ashlar quoins and a shaped cornice. It has a Welsh slate roof and stone end chimney stacks. This house is also two storeys tall with four bays, although the left bay has filled windows. The plank door features a moulded architrave, a false keystone, a frieze, and a segmental pediment. The ground floor has square C20 casement windows in enlarged original plain surrounds, while the upper floor has elongated windows. The face towards the road has rendered walls with painted raised stone quoins, a Welsh slate roof with coped gables and kneelers, and yellow brick chimney stacks on stone bases. The house is two storeys tall with four bays and includes a C20 door with a pilastered surround, a prostyle Ionic porch with a moulded entablature and triangular pediment, and 2-pane sash windows with moulded stone architraves. Other outbuildings are not included in the listing.
