Description
Barracks House is a fortified house dating from the early to mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. The walls are a metre thick, constructed of red and yellow coursed sandstone sourced from the nearby Roman Wall. The house features a 20th-century tile roof with coped gables and kneelers, and the gables have been raised to incorporate a datestone from the 1760s with the initials T.M. A 20th-century brick chimney stack is also present.
The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. There is a 20th-century door set in an 18th-century opening. Original slit vents at two levels have been blocked, and there is a water outlet at first floor level to the left of the entrance. The windows are all 20th-century in 20th-century openings. The left end wall has an original blocked attic window. The rear wall once had a 16th-century ground floor entrance with a drawbar tunnel, which has been enlarged, and the original lintel is now used as a mantelpiece inside. There is also a blocked 18th-century entrance and windows, with 20th-century windows in 20th-century openings.
Inside, there are remains of a stone spiral staircase within the thickness of the wall. A photographic record of the building prior to alterations is available in the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England files. Despite the significant alterations, this building is extremely rare in the area, with only one other example located at Brackenrigg, south of Bowness. An extension made of cobbles to the left is considered to be of no interest.
